Thursday 9/1
Today Linda Worked at the Post Office Site.
After some clean-up first thing this morning
she sat down and from
across the room noticed this little blob
up in the rafters.
a BAT ... Oh no, not again !
Two "bat encounters" in one week.
She called FM and asked them to send
someone to take care of it.

After closer examination she decided
it was ....
a BAT ... Oh no, not again !
Two "bat encounters" in one week.
She called FM and asked them to send
someone to take care of it.
In about 15 minutes this brave young man
showed up and pulled the little
guy off the rafter where he had attached
himself.
This was not a happy bat .... look at those fangs !
Once outside he opened up his wings but
would not fly away so it had to be
placed in a tree.
After all that excitement we settled down,
read our script and
waited for visitors to come .... They didn't !
soooo .....
We got busy making paper hats.
We need to make an additional 3,000 hats for
Sunset by the Mississippi's children's
parade next year.
Today Linda made about 45 hats.
UPDATE:
as of 9/13 all 3,000 hats were done!
Friday 9/2
This morning we had our
September Mission Breakfast where
we said goodbye to 47 Senior Missionaries.
Tradition is for the departing missionaries to
present a skit or perform a musical number.
This morning it was a skit about ....
Rendezvous's recently cut vignette
Jed & Annie.
It was a combination of :
The vignette,
the YPM's "audition" skit from
Sunset by the Mississippi,
and a musical number
(Poor Jed is Dead)
from the show "Oklahoma"
Oh, and by the way ....
Apparently Jed died from eating Egg-g-g-g's .
There were also 12 Young Sister Missionaries
(YSM's)
leaving and they did their own little skit.
We laughed with them as they
role-played some of the funny things
visitor's ask them.
At the end of their skit they sang a beautiful
song about the Savior.
After all the fun we once again followed
tradition and everyone sang
"Farewell Nauvoo"
which was followed by lots of goodbyes,
hugs, laughter & tears.
We have come to love these missionaries that
took us under their wings and taught us so much.
They have done their best to prepare us
to receive the mighty torch they
are now passing on.
Sunday 9/4
It has been a beautiful weather day today.
It started off with this gorgeous scene
as we were on our way to church
at 6:50 this morning.

Monday 9/5
Today marks 6 months since we entered the
MTC
We have now, officially,
completed 1/3 of our mission - crazy !
Thursday 9/8
Linda has been working in the Sewing Room
for a while now but has only been
scheduled about two times a month so it has
been difficult to get her projects done.
She has been working on a dress for
Sister Gross and Last Friday she
finally was able to finish it !
Today Sister Gross picked it up and took
it home with her .... YAY !
What a difference it makes when you are
able to work for two 7-hour days in a row.

Saturday 9/10
Before work this morning we were enjoying
some time out on our front porch.
Our flowers looked so pretty we took
this picture.
Later today, while Linda was working at the
Sarah Granger Kimball Home,
The Brian Warby Family showed up !
They had been to the FLC where Steve was
working and he told them where
Linda was...the kids came into the house and
asked, "do you know my dad....Brian Warby?"
when she said yes, they turned and
yelled out the door, "We found her !"
The Warby Family lived in Bend the
same time we did, Brian was just a little kid,
so it was fun to reconnect
with this family today.
Monday 9/12
Another P-Day rolls around and we decided
to drive over to Iowa.
We crossed the draw bridge at
Fort Madison and made an unplanned stop
at the old Santa Fe Train Depots.
We toured one building that had 3 rooms
of artifacts including an old
Edison wind-up phonograph that actually
works. Our tour guide played one
of the records for us....amazing.
Just when we thought we had seen it all,
he asked if we'd like to go to
another building ... we said sure!
So off we went .... through a hole in the fence ....
across the tracks and through a hole in the fence
on the other side of the tracks.
We ended up in another old train depot.
To our surprise, there was an old
1896, Packard pump organ. Our guide asked if
either of us played and of course Linda
said Yes. So he wheels up a little
secretary chair, shoves the organ around and
says .... here, why don't you play it .... So she did !
This instrument sold for a whopping $70.00
in 1896 plus $3.25 in interest after paying it
off in $5.00 a month payments.
The organ had just been restored and was
just in the depot temporarily .... lucky us !
We continued on and soon came to a display
of telegraph keys.
Steve told our guide that he was a radio operator
in the Army and so .... he let him try one out !

We had a great time on this unplanned tour ...
so glad we decided to stop by.
From Ft. Madison we continued south to
a little town we talk about quite a bit
in Nauvoo ....
The town? Montrose.
This was our view as we drove into town.
Many of the Saints lived here in old shacks or
broken down barracks for a
period of time in 1839 ... John Taylor's family
for one .... until they could build homes in Nauvoo.
It was also where the saints crossed
the Mississippi when they were driven out
of their beautiful city in February, 1846.
Many of the journal writings tell how,
after crossing the river,
they looked back at their town and beautiful Temple
and knew it would be the last time,
in this life, they would ever see their
City Beautiful .... Nauvoo.
At a memorial along the river we stopped to
read about this time and place in
Mormon history. We read a few Journal entries
that were heart wrenching accounts of
their circumstances.
"We commenced crossing the river, the weather
being very cold and with large quantities of ice
running in the river. We leave in the city of
Nauvoo a good house of brick and a
quantity of furniture, without
making a sale of anything."

We are so grateful the Lord answered
Wilford Woodruff's prayer.
Here we are, serving a mission in Nauvoo.
Helping people "remember" the lives and the
sacrifices of these faithful saints.
The spirit is strong here and
we feel it a great privilege to be serving here.
Tuesday 9/13
Yip-eeeee !
Today Linda picked up her new site dress.
The Sisters get 2 site dresses and 1 show dress
when they arrive in the spring.
In the fall they are allowed to purchase one
more site dress (for $85) if they want to.
This afternoon we visited the ....
Mission Cabinet Shop
.... it's a pretty nice set up they have here !
Not quite sure what they do, but
it looks like they are ready for just about
any project that comes their way.
Thursday 9/15
We were on our way (walking) to the
Family Living Center and
noticed this tree.
We began asking around .... does anyone
know what kind of tree this is?
Nearly 2 weeks later we finally found
someone that said, very matter of factually,
it's a Magnolia and the red things are
seed cones ... like a pine cone.
It even smells like one.
Friday 9/16
Hawaii hasn't got anything
on Nauvoo ....
In the Sewing Room this plant
has started to bloom.
It is a Plumeria .... a tropical plant,
the flower is popularly used to make
Hawaiian leis.
This one would only have enough blooms
to make a teeny, tiny lei ....
but it sure smells good !
Friday 9/23
Steve works in the Brick Yard quite
frequently but today he
took special notice of a picture in
one of the demonstration rooms.
Usually he just focuses on the Pug Mill
(which isn't here anymore) but
today he noticed that in the background
is our house !
The back porch isn't enclosed like it is now
and all the trees are W A A Y Y smaller
so it has been a while since
this picture was taken.
Sunday 9/25
In our mission we don't have any callings
because none of our records are here.
So we all take turns doing things like
playing the organ for Sacrament Meeting.
Today Linda was asked to play.
Usually the back curtain is open and the
cultural hall is at least half full but
so many missionaries are finishing up
their missions and going home that now we
only fill the chapel.

playing prelude .... by the time the meeting began,
the chapel was very full)
We have often wondered what to call our
group of missionaries that meets together on Sunday.
The Mission President explains that
We are a Dependent Branch
under the umbrella of the Nauvoo 1st Ward and
their bishop, Bishop Casey Cluff.
We are so big that we don't meet with
them and that is why we are considered
a Dependent Branch ... So now you know !
Tuesday 9/27
Back in June when they planted these flowers
they were just little "pony pack" plants.
Now they are big gorgeous full
planters that are beautiful.
we just found out they are planning on
pulling them all out on Friday .... WHAT ?
Yes, by Friday evening they will be
gone and all that will remain is a plain, dirt planter.
The weather is cooling off and fall is in the air !

Wednesday 9/28
One month ago Linda began working on
a 2nd shawl. She has put in
over 20 hours of weaving.
Tonight she finished and took it off the loom.

Saturday 10/1
(sneaking this one Oct. day in the Sep. blog)
Tonight Linda worked for 6 more hours
so she could finish the shawl
It turned out so nice .....
she just had to try it on !
a total of 30 hours invested in this
beautiful Shawl .... Love It !
September has come and gone and we have
nearly completed 7 months of our
mission .... time is flying by !
