Sunday 10/2
Today in between sessions of General Conference
we went for a little drive around town.
These big grain trucks have been busily
running in and out of town for the
last couple of weeks .... They are hauling
none other than ....
C O R N !
this silo down by the river on the north
end of town is overflowing with
kernels of corn.
After the final Session of Conference
we went for a walk.
A group just left last week after
doing a big "Dig" (excavating project)
in a large field just below the temple
We walked up to investigate and found this !
It is the foundation of the
Edward Hunter Home .
Edward was a faithful and generous member
of the Church and friend/body guard
of Joseph.
For a period of time Joseph was in hiding
in this home but with the windows
open he could hear the
Sunday services that took place
in the Groves just north of the home.
Monday 10/3
After work today we decided to go
collect chestnuts !
(Something we have never done before)
Across the street from the Brigham Young Home
there are several big Chestnut Trees.
The Chestnuts grow inside these prickly
(very sharp)
pods. When they are ready the pods
break open and the Chestnuts
fall to the ground.
We collected just a few and learned that we
can roast them in the oven as well as
over the "open fire", as the song says.

Wednesday 10/5
Today Linda had an "A" shift at the FLC
and Steve had a "Special-On Call" day however,
we both ended up working a "D" (all day) shift
at the Family Living Center.
We are trying to use up all the thread on the
small loom, so Linda sewed and loaded shuttles
as fast as Steve was weaving and
emptying them.
After work we drove down by the river.
We have had Flood Warnings
everyday for a few weeks now but
no flooding here.
The river is quite a bit higher than normal, and
even though this bush typically is not
in the water, we are still a ways from any
flooding here in Nauvoo.
As we left the river
we passed by a large tree that had these
strange, brain-like, fruit growing
on them
It is an Osage Orange .... not editable !
Next to our driveway there is another tree
with a strange green fruit growing on it.
we have been watching to see what they will do
They are kind of fuzzy, like a peach
but when we opened one up ....
there was a nut inside .... kind of like a
walnut.
Thursday 10/6
We don't go to very many movies but
tonight we traveled ALL the way
to Keokuk (20 min) to
see the movie "Sully"
It was playing at this theater in a little
old indoor mall.
It wasn't anything fancy ... kind of old,
but it was clean and comfortable.
We were pleasantly surprised when
they only charged us
$6.25 each AND ....
that included popcorn and a drink.
We enjoyed the movie and
as we left the theater the usher was
waiting at the exit with a tray of
mints and hard candies saying
"thank you for coming"
Now we haven't been to a lot of movies,
but still, we have never heard of
this before .... how about you?
Friday 10/7
This morning was our Mission Breakfast
and once again we had to
bid farewell to ....
these 19 missionaries
that will be finishing up their missions and
returning home during this month.
We love them and will miss them here in Nauvoo but
we know their families are anxiously
awaiting their return.
Wednesday 10/12
Tonight we roasted our first chestnuts.
1st you have to cut through the shell
or they will explode while cooking ....
An "X" on the round side ....
then in the oven they go ....
and yes, we did have one explode .... yikes !
After 20 minutes at 450 degrees we
removed them from the oven ....
The shells had curled back where we cut
them and we could
see the golden chestnut inside
within just a couple of minutes they had
cooled off enough that we were
able to peel them all
voila - Chestnuts !
They were quite different than we expected
inside. Not as hard as most nuts, but
fleshy and soft. The flavor was pretty bland
but had just a hint of sweetness.
Sunday 10/16
Our weather is changing here in Nauvoo.
With cold mornings and warm days
a few of the trees are beginning
to change color
Like this maple across the street from
our house .... so pretty .... can't
wait to see Nauvoo when all the trees
are in full fall color !
Back in August we posted this picture ....
in front of the Browning Gun Shop, well,
things are changing around here ....
all the plants are gone .... so sad ....
we will miss you!
A while back one of the sisters came
to me with this funny little
piece of wood. It doesn't look like
much of anything and is only
about 3 inches long, however ....
this little piece of old rotting wood is
part of the original roof of the
Carthage Jail where the Prophet, Joseph,
and his brother Hyrum Smith were Martyred.
Wednesday 10/19
It's Autumn time, It's Autumn time,
lalala .... think Primary ....
the leaves are falling down ....
lalala .... pretty colors can be found !
Around our house there are six
large trees and they are all ....
HOLLOW .... YIKES
this one is really bad and will probably
have to be cut down.
We will be sad to see it go, however,
we will have a little more peace of mind
knowing it won't fall on our
house during one of our winter storms.
Friday 10/21
This month Linda has been serving in
the Lands and Records Office ....
This office has the records of all the people
that lived here in Nauvoo during the time
the Pioneers lived here in the 1840's.
We have information like what
Priesthood Quorum the men were in,
if they owned property & where it was,
Birth, Baptism, Endowment dates.
If they were in the Nauvoo Legion or
the Nauvoo Brass Band, and
copies of journal entries about them and
their lives here in Nauvoo.
Linda is training so she can help visitor's
find information about their ancestors.
We have found many Nauvoo Pioneers that
we are related to ....

Linda copied all the records for these
ancestors onto a flash drive .... now,
we need to read them all!
Most of these owned property here in the
Nauvoo area and we have mapped their homes
and been to see where they lived
while they were here.
Friday 10/28
Tomorrow is Bootiful Nauvoo
and
for this event the missionaries
and the community are working together
to carve 500 pumpkins.
Today we were able to help.
First off, you have to take a turn
cleaning out some pumpkins....
and they were certainly a
gooey mess !
We did six pumpkins .... three each
Once they are cleaned out they are set
aside in this section
until someone comes along and picks one out
to carve.
There are lots of volunteers from both the
mission and the community
They show up whenever they can and
stay as long as they can
we only had an hour and a half so we had to
work fast !
Just getting started
Every pumpkin has already had a design
drawn on it
(artists have been doing that for the last 2 weeks)
The artists put an "X" on the pieces that
are to be cut out
Linda is working on a spider and ....
Steve is working on a Ghost
After we finished our pumpkins a hole for the
candle was punched inside and they
were sprayed with bleach water to
help preserve them
We were able to carve these four
pumpkins. We had lots of fun and wanted
to keep working but we had a show to do
and couldn't stay any longer.
Can't wait to see them all lit up !
Saturday 10/29
After a long day of work it was time for
BOOTIFUL NAUVOO
First up .... The Parade !
The mission made this Chinese Dragon ....
Our mission doctor
(retired OBGYN doctor)
fittingly dressed up like a Stork that
delivered 1,000's of babies .... and he DID !
the mission also decorated one of the
Carriages for our Crazy Band
and pulled by none other than the
horse team Mike & Ned.
Steve rode on the wagon and ....
Linda danced along side
leading the way for other dancers to follow.
The Lansfords came down from
Davenport for the festivities and thought it
was pretty fun to see Grandma & Grandpa in the parade.

We had a fun evening in the
beautiful 70 degree weather .... amazing !
Cora & Morgan
We had hot dogs & hamburgers for dinner and
free candy and kettle corn was provided by the mission.
There were thousand's of people and
hundreds of beautifully carved pumpkins on
display for the pumpkin walk.
Sunday 10/30
Out for an afternoon walk....
love all the Autumn colors and the
crunch of the leaves as we
walked along.
Tonight we had our District Meeting.
Two couples will be going home
this week
E/S Waite, S/E Rasmussen, E/S Stoker, E/S Gibson
E/S Sullivan, E/S Nagle (not pictured)
The Gibson's are brand new missionaries
here in Nauvoo and the Nagle's were new to our
district last month (moved from
another district).
Both the Nagle's and the Sullivan's will be leaving us.
The Sullivan's have been our District Leaders since
we arrived here in Nauvoo ... they welcomed us
with soup and homemade bread our
very first night in Nauvoo ....
We will miss them !

Next year at this time we will be finished
with our mission and back home
in Star .... where is the time going ?
