Saturday 5/6
Today was our last day serving in Carthage
We were busy and had a great day.
We even had a chance to help train one of
the new couples on
Opening/Closing procedures and some
computer things.
Late in the afternoon several cars turned into
the parking lot, all at once, so we were "getting ready"
for a nice big tour.
But as the visitors began
emerging from those cars we realized they weren't
here to take a tour at all, but .....
to take some Prom Pictures !
I'm sure they were expecting beautiful tulips
as the backdrop for those pictures, but alas....
They didn't realize the tulips were gone .... They managed
to take a few shots around the grounds and
then were on their way .... no doubt to find another
place that still had some spring flowers.
Though they were not dressed in our LDS Standards
they were still beautiful and full of excitement.
Sunday 5/7
This was our first day back in the sites in Nauvoo.
We served in the John Taylor Home and did
about 6 or 7 tours. Some of them were
non-members and seemed annoyed with all the
religious information they received but others loved
the story we presented.
This evening we had a nice Sociable where
all the new YSM's
(Young Sister Missionaries)
introduced themselves.
First the 10 new, freshly out of the MTC introduced themselves
Then the 9 returning sisters spoke. They introduced themselves and
told where they served their Outbound Missions and
related an experience they had while outbound and
what they learned from their experience.
We love having these young sisters here in Nauvoo.
They bring a renewed enthusiasm to the Mission
and after a long winter,
we can use the excitement they bring with them.
Wednesday 5/10
This morning at our training meeting
most of the time was spent ....
Introducing the new
YPM's (Young Performing Missionaries)
they are a Joy to have here in our mission for the
summer and this sounds and looks like
a great bunch of very talented young people !
Friday 5/12
This morning bright and early was another one
of our Farewell Breakfasts
This one for Elder & Sister Hopkin
They both have worked for FM their entire missions.
She for Housing & He is an electrician
We will miss seeing them all around Nauvoo each day.
TURTLES !
There are lots of turtles down by the river this spring.
Adult turtles and ....
Mama's with their baby turtles .... they are so cute to see.
And our day continues .... we have had a busy day today !
Earlier this year we made bricks for all
our grandkids.
Since the Lansford's are moving "out west"
and won't be able to come to
Nauvoo when all the other kids come we decided
to give them their bricks this weekend.
But when we opened up the box full of bricks we found
two that had flaws and had broken apart ..... sooo ....
We got busy at the Brick Yard and made
new ones to replace the broken ones.
First Linda set the type ....
(Remember everything goes in backwards)
Then Steve makes the imprint which looks like ....

Morgan & Sydney will get the new bricks
Next he will Push them out of the form and ....
set them out to dry. It will be another week before
they are dry enough to sand and then fire in the kiln.
This afternoon as we sat out on our front porch
Elder's Cook and Finlinson came down the street in
this cute little buggy .....
we see such fun things here in Nauvoo.

Saturday 5/13
Tomorrow is Mother's Day and since the Lansford's
are moving soon they decided to come to
Nauvoo for a short overnight trip.
They have been here several times so this
afternoon we went to the park ....
right after going to see the turtles and snakes !
Morgan tried out this little slide ... doesn't he look happy ?
well, at the bottom of the slide he flew right off the end
and landed on his back ... poor little guy.
But he is tough and got up and ran off to play on
a different slide ....
one that wasn't quite as slick.
Cora enjoyed this twirly slide

Sunday 5/14
Sacrament meeting here in the mission begins
early. You have to arrive by 7:30 in order to
get a "soft" seat.
We loved having some of our family with
us because we were on the program as
two of the three speakers.
Each of the Sister's received a beautiful long stem
red rose as a Mother's Day tribute.
Back at our house we had a nice Ham dinner.
the men cleaned up after the meal while
Trudi & I watched the kids and visited.
Before heading back to Davenport we presented
the kids with their very own, personalized
Nauvoo Bricks.
As you can see they were very excited and ....
loved getting this special brick from
Grandma and Grandpa.
Thursday & Friday
5/18 - 5/19
For two days in a row we had the pleasure of
being taught by
Elder W. Craig Zwick of the Seventy
and his wife Jan
They have served for 22 years in this capacity.
They have also served as Mission President in both
Chili and Puerto Rico.
They have given a lifetime of service and we
were well taught by them.
This was their last "Mission Tour" assignment
before being given Emeritus status.
Elder Zwick and President Hall
are long time, boyhood friends .... it looks
like are still able to have a good time together.
Tonight we had our
Sunset by the Mississippi Rehearsal
It was the first night rehearsing with the
YPM's
(Young Performing Missionaries)
Linda is one of the 6 "Dancing Grandma's"
Sister's Nielsen, Hipple & Waite
The Elders are performing "Stouthearted Men"
again this year

Sunday 5/21
Tonight our MTC Class got together for a
pot luck dinner at the Aina's home.
The Aina's will be heading home in just a
couple of weeks so we wanted to have
one last get together before they leave for Oregon.
We have the best MTC Class - 15 couples strong !
Tuesday 5/23
Things are getting real around here ....
All the preparations for summer are coming
together. Today the ....
Nauvoo Brass Band took a
"Practice Run" on the band wagon ....
we are really getting into the spirit of
"Summer in Nauvoo"
Tonight was another Sunset by the Mississippi rehearsal
when we finished about 8 p.m. .....
This rainbow was shining big & bright above the
Pageant Building where we practice.

Wednesday 5/24
Today was our P-day so we decided to
go to Burlington, Iowa for lunch.
We ended up at ....
The Big Muddy's Bar & Grill
It is a nice Family Restaurant that used to be an
old train depot right on the Mississippi.
This was the view from our table.
The Suspension bridge goes from Iowa on one side
to Illinois on the other side.
There are barges all along this part of the river
being pushed along by powerful tugboats.
Thursday 5/25
Today the grounds crew continued planting the
large flower pots that line main street.
The plants looks so small right now, but in just
a few weeks they will have grown and will
be full and beautiful.
Elder & Sister Johnson are working hard to get
everything ready for our summer crowds.
Every Thursday here in the sites of Nauvoo
we are blessed by this man.
We don't know his name but he visits every
site, each and every Thursday after he
completes his assignment of
serving in the Nauvoo Temple.
He brings us something to drink, breads, nuts,
and other food items he has picked up
at the local markets.
He is a quiet man ....
He doesn't allow us to say thank you ....
He just loves sharing with us.
Tonight was an evening off for us so ....
we decided to go up to the
Outdoor Stage and watch the
Sarah Granger Cast's Dress Rehearsal of
Sunset by the Mississippi
Part way through the show the YPM's ran out into
the audience and grabbed 3 people to
be part of the next number
"Along Came Jones"
Steve was selected to be the Lumberjack that saves
Sue from being run over by a train.
The "Real" star of the stage was

appearances during the show and is
always a big hit !
Monday 5/29
Today while sweeping the walks in front
of the John Taylor home
Linda noticed some purple bird droppings .....
that means that the Mulberries are almost ripe.
So when we got home this afternoon we checked
our Mulberry Tree and sure enough ....
Soon we will begin seeing little critters
(like raccoons & opossums)
scurrying around under the tree gathering up
these purple berries .... they love them !
HaHaHa Tonight when we arrived home after
our Rendezvous show there he was ....
our little raccoon friend .... eating mulberries!
Wednesday 5/31
Tonight was the Lucy Mack Cast's Debut for
the Sunset By The Mississippi show.
Stouthearted Men ....
the United States-Eastern States soft shoe number ....
and ..... Mississippi Mud
Surely, there will be many more pictures to come.
Our show was a big success and
we all had a great time !
May has flown by and with only 98 days left
on our mission (but who's counting)
September 7th will be here before we know it !
